One of nature’s clever little helpers, apple cider vinegar has so many benefits for our wellbeing that it should be a store cupboard essential for every health savvy family. Not only can it be quickly whizzed up to make a delicious alternative to the commercially produced, sugar laden dressings you can pick up in the store, (check out our recipe below!) it’s been used for generations to help with many common complaints from the common cold to indigestion. As a decent sized bottle of good quality vinegar can cost as little as $12, it’s a nutritious and versatile product we think everyone should have at home.
What’s So Great About Vinegar?
Some studies have suggested that regular consumption of apple cider vinegar can help promote weight loss and lower cholesterol. This may be due to the fact that it contains pectin, a type of soluble fibre found in plant cells, which helps to reduce the amount of bad cholesterol absorbed by your intestines and controls blood sugar levels.
This wonderful gift from nature is a great standby for people with digestive issues as it helps maintain the right balance of good bacteria in the gut. For those patients who regularly suffer with digestive problems like Irritable Bowel Syndrome or candida overgrowth, small amounts of apple cider vinegar taken regularly throughout the day can help keep on top of their condition in between visits to the clinic.
Did you know that apple cider vinegar has antibacterial properties? Few people know it’s a cost effective, tried and trusted remedy for staving off sore throats, soothing upset tummies and even clearing stuffy noses. A teaspoon in warm water at the onset of a cold is a traditional home remedy for many common ailments.
Finally, we all know that our modern day diet often contains far too many processed, acid forming foods which can have a detrimental effect on our health. When taken regularly as part of a wellness programme, this amazing foodstuff can have an alkalising effect on the system, helping to reduce inflammation, boost immunity and bring your body back to a state of balance.
What To Look Out For:
Apple cider vinegar can be picked up in most supermarkets, but the cheaper brands won’t have the same health benefits as those labelled as “with the Mother”. Look to buy an organic brand which clearly states this on the label. A good quality product will have sediment at the bottom of the bottle. (This is the bit that contains all the raw enzymes and goodness so don’t be tempted to strain it off before use!)
For some people however, the thought of drinking vinegar is just a little too pungent to take. For this reason, some manufacturers produce a range of pills containing the active ingredients. We believe (and there is some research to corroborate this) that the best results are achieved when we eat foods in the state that nature intended and a product manufactured in a laboratory will not have the same benefits as food in it’s natural state. For this reason, we’ve found a great tasting recipe which offers all of the goodness without the after-taste!
This delicious vinaigrette can be drizzled over lightly steamed greens, or used to dress raw salads. Let food be your medicine!
