Acne is the most common of skin diseases. Very few people manage to escape their teenage and young adult years without some pimples and blackheads. However many adults are experiencing Acne and Skin Blemishes beyond teenage years. Skin disorders are due to Chronic Inflammatory diseases of the skin, with lesions occurring most frequently on the face, chest and back as they have the highest number of oil glands. There is an over activity of the oil glands (sebaceous glands) of the skin.
The excessive sebum produced blocks the gland opening which then becomes infected & inflamed. Whiteheads are plugs of oil and dead skin cells under the surface of the skin that block oil from flowing freely to the skin surface. They can turn into blackheads when they reach the surface of the skin. Acne usually starts at puberty when increased levels of hormones (known as androgens) cause an increase in the size and oil production of glands. Other underlying causes can be due to poor diet/nutrition and the body’s inability to eliminate toxins.
The importance of a good diet is important, including the need to reduce sugars and fried foods. Supplements including zinc, may be given to promote healing, reduce scarring and inhibit the growth of acne producing organisms. We advise that zinc levels should be measured before taking any zinc supplements. Some nutrients such as
Essential Fatty Acids help alleviate acne but results may not be noticed for 3 months after commencing supplementation.
